Why One Aircraft Leaves the Formation

Imagine fighter aircraft flying together in perfect formation.

Then one aircraft pulls away — leaving an empty space in the sky.

That empty space is the message.

The Missing Man Formation is one of military aviation’s most moving tributes to a fallen air warrior. The Indian Air Force describes it as an aerial salute to deceased comrades, with the deliberate gap representing the person who is no longer there.

The formation is flown during memorials and remembrance ceremonies.

In 2017, three Su-30MKI fighters flew a Missing Man Formation during the funeral of Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh. The IAF described the tribute as honouring a deceased comrade and celebrating the spirit of an eternal warrior.

The formation has also been used to remember the air warriors of the Kargil War.

On 27 May 2019, four MiG-21 aircraft flew a Missing Man Formation at Air Force Station Bhisiana to honour those who made the supreme sacrifice during Operation Safed Sagar. The date also marked the anniversary of Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, who was killed during the Kargil conflict.

The formation looks simple.

But its message is powerful:

“One of us is missing.”

The aircraft continue forward.

Because the squadron must continue.

No speech is needed in the sky.

Just aircraft, an empty space —

and the memory of someone who once flew there.
